Description

Dabu Print is one of the resist printing styles of hand block printing practiced in various parts of India. A paste comprises of flour, black soil and lime used to print on clothes by wooden blocks then keep it in Indigo dye tank. After dipping clothes into indigo dye tank it comes out green but after oxidation it becomes blue. Tarapur village of Madhya Pradesh is a less known craft village once famous for its 500 years old Nandana style of hand block printing.

Today Dabu is synonymous with Indigo color (Indigo dye is extracted from Indigofera tinctoria plant, an indigenous plant to India and Asia). Indigo was used widely in Dabu hand block printing because it was only known natural cold dye in the past.

Today synthetic indigo widely used in hand block printing in place of natural indigo.
