Madder or Manjishtha (मंजिष्ठ) in Sanskrit is an age old source of natural alizarin used to dye fabric to get turkey red and different shades of red color from red to pink. Any color variation depends upon the quality of madder roots and local water contents.
Madder roots used in “Ayurveda” since ages to treat various blood and skin related diseases. Madder is having a natural wound healing property, blood purification, used in menstrual problem and various other problems. It works as an healing agent to keep skin healthy. Generally in hand block printing industry as a source of natural alizarin, morinda tinctoria roots were used but ajrakh printers were using madder roots to get red color but today whole hand block printing industry shifted to synthetic alizarin.
To dye with madder requires special attention and expertise because a little mWeightistake may ruin the printed colors.
Modal is an eco friendly fabric.
