Description

“प्राचीन – अर्वाचीन” a baby step to revive ancient natural dyeing technique in handloom weaving in present times with modern touch.
When alum was not discovered many thousand years ago Indian natural dyeing was on its peak and use of manjishtha roots (Rubia cordifolia) pioneered by Indians to get shades of red and pink.
In “अथर्व वेद” & “कौटिल्य अर्थशास्त्र” mention of “लोध्र”/लोध (Symplocos Racemosa) is mentioned as “रंग बंधा” or colour binder and light shade natural dye. Documentation done by calico museum is also a rich source of secondary information about the use of symplocos in dyeing.
In Ayurveda mention of “Lodhra” is there as a valuable source of medicinal herb to treat various skin and menstrual disorder related health problems.
This is Maheshwari handloom woven sarees are woven with natural herbal dyed threads using ancient Indian natural dyeing technique and ingredients. We have used manjishtha roots, parijaat (Night flowering jasmine) flowers and lakadong turmeric (Meghalaya haldi) to get the shades of deep pink and yellow.
This collection is prepared in Maheshwar cluster which has a history of more than 300 years established by Devi Maa Ahilya Bai Holkar the then queen of Maheshwar.  She invited weavers from different parts of India to start weaving in Maheshwar and patronize them.
With blessings of Maa Narmada (Rewa) & Devi Maa Ahilya Bai Holkar we are presenting our first handloom sarees prepared with natural dyed threads using ancient Indian dyeing technique.
